How to Pack Artwork and Mirrors Safely for Moving
How to Pack Artwork and Mirrors Safely for Moving
Protect your frames, canvases, and mirrors from cracks, chips, and chaos.
Introduction
Framed artwork, mirrors, and canvas prints are among the most fragile — and often most valuable — items in any move. One wrong bump and you’re left with cracked glass or a punctured canvas. But with the right technique and materials, you can move them safely and stress-free.
Here’s how to pack your artwork and mirrors properly for your next move.
1. Use the Right Type of Box
Flat, sturdy, purpose-built boxes reduce the risk of impact damage and prevent pressure on edges and corners.
Recommended Product:
-
Picture Packing Box (& Mirrors) – Single - Designed specifically for flat items like paintings, mirrors, and prints.
2. Wrap Each Item Properly
Start with a soft layer to prevent surface scratches:
-
Use acid-free paper or clean packing paper first.
-
Add bubble wrap or foam sheets over the top, paying special attention to the corners.
-
Secure with packing tape — but never tape directly onto the frame or glass.
3. Protect the Corners
Use cardboard corner protectors or fold your own using leftover box panels. Corners take the brunt of impact during handling.
4. Pack Standing, Not Flat
Always stand artwork and mirrors vertically (as they would hang on the wall). Laying them flat increases pressure and risk of breakage.
If you’re packing multiple frames together:
-
Place the largest at the back and smaller ones in front.
-
Add soft padding (like towels or wrap) between each.
5. Fill Gaps Inside the Box
Once packed, gently fill the sides of the box with scrunched packing paper, soft linen, or foam to stop shifting during transport.
6. Label Clearly
Mark the box:
-
“Fragile – Artwork” & “This Way Up”
-
Include arrows and room names for faster unpacking.
Bonus Tip: Avoid Direct Sun or Moisture
If your move involves temporary storage or time in a hot car, avoid leaving frames exposed to heat, sunlight or moisture — especially if they contain glass or canvas.
