Introduction

After a long day of moving, the last thing you want is to dig through 20 boxes just to find your phone charger or a towel. That’s why your “open first” box — also known as a first-night essentials box — is one of the most important things you can pack.

Here’s what to include, how to pack it, and why you should keep it with you, not in the truck.

What Is a First-Night Essentials Box?

It’s a clearly labelled box (or suitcase) that contains everything you’ll need in the first 24–48 hours after your move. Think of it like an overnight bag for your entire household — practical, accessible, and ready to go.

What to Include

For Everyone:

• Bed linen, pillowcases and one set of towels
  
• Pyjamas and a change of clothes
  
• Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant)
  
• Phone chargers and power boards
  
• Toilet paper
  
• Snacks and basic groceries
  
• Plates, mugs, cutlery
  
• Kettle or coffee gear
  
• Cleaning wipes, hand soap, dish cloth
  

For Kids:

• Favourite toy or comfort item
  
• Nightlight (if needed)
  
• Change of clothes, nappies, wipes
  
• Easy snacks
  

For Pets:

• Food, bowl, leash, bedding
  
• Any medication or comfort items
  

For Work or Daily Function:

• Laptop and charger
  
• Modem/router
  
• Basic tools or box cutter
  
• Folder with any moving documents, keys, remotes

How to Pack It

Use a sturdy, medium-sized box or a small suitcase that travels with you (not in the removal truck).
Label clearly on all sides: “Open First – Essentials”.
