How to Pack Furniture and Bulky Household Items for Moving
How to Pack Furniture and Bulky Household Items for Moving
From lamps to large decor — here’s how to protect awkward, oversized pieces during your move.
Introduction
When it comes to moving house, not everything fits neatly into a box. Bulky furniture, large décor pieces, and awkward household items like lamps and appliances need special attention. These items are often the most valuable — and the most easily damaged.
Here’s how to pack and prepare large or oddly shaped household items to ensure they arrive safely.
1. Dismantle What You Can
The fewer large, rigid pieces you have to manoeuvre, the better.
-
Remove legs from tables
-
Take shades off lamps
-
Detach shelves, doors or glass panels from units
Keep screws and fittings together in labelled bags taped to the item or packed in an “assembly hardware” box.
2. Wrap and Protect Properly
Use padding to avoid dents, scratches and breakage:
-
Wrap furniture edges and surfaces with moving blankets or old towels
-
Use bubble wrap or padding on delicate areas (like table corners or lamp bases)
-
Tape securely — but never directly onto wood or fabric
3. Pack Smaller Bulky Items in Large, Strong Boxes
Some large but lightweight or soft items can go in boxes — like lamps, cushions, kitchen appliances, or large toys.
Recommended Product:
- Large Heavy Duty Double Wall Tea Chest 93L Box → Perfect for lamps, kitchen appliances, pots and pans, decor, and other large items.
4. Label Oversized Items Clearly
-
Use masking tape or tags to label items like "Fragile – Lamp Base" or "Top Heavy – Keep Upright"
-
Write room names or instructions to help movers place them correctly
5. Use Moving Blankets or Sheets in the Truck
Even well-wrapped items can bump into each other in transit. Use moving blankets or linen to cushion contact points between furniture pieces during loading.
Bonus Tip: Load Heavy Items First
Put heavier, solid items (like dressers or tables) at the back and bottom of the truck.
Stack lighter, wrapped pieces (like cushions or small boxes) on top.
