How to Pack Books for Moving (Without Breaking Your Back)
How to Pack Books for Moving (Without Breaking Your Back)
Your guide to protecting your collection and packing efficiently.
Introduction
Books are one of the heaviest things people underestimate when moving. Stack a few in the wrong box, and you’re either looking at a crushed bottom, a sore back, or a snapped tape job halfway down the driveway.
Whether you’re packing a few cookbooks or an entire wall of fiction, this guide will show you how to pack books for moving safely, efficiently, and with the right type of box.
1. Choose the Right Box
Books are best packed in small, sturdy boxes that keep the weight manageable and the structure strong.
Recommended Product:
-
Small 40L Moving Box – 50/100/200 Pack → Designed to hold heavy items like books, wine bottles, and glassware. Manufactured with the strongest recycled cardboard available in Australia.
2. Sort Before You Pack
Moving is the perfect time to cull. Ask yourself:
-
Do I really need that old uni textbook?
-
Will I ever re-read this?
-
Can I donate some to free up shelf space?
Only pack the books you love or plan to use again.
3. Line the Bottom of the Box
Use a layer of packing paper or a towel at the base of the box to add padding and prevent scuffing. This is especially useful if you’re packing first editions or sentimental titles.
4. Pack Books Flat (Or Spine Down)
You have three safe packing methods:
-
Flat (stacked like pancakes): Best for weight distribution.
-
Spine down (standing up like on a shelf): Good if books are same height.
-
Avoid: Spine up — it warps pages and weakens the binding.
Alternate directions if stacking multiple layers to prevent warping.
5. Fill the Gaps
Use packing paper, scrunched newspaper, or even socks to fill in any empty space so books don’t shift during transit.
6. Don't Overpack
Even though they fit, don't push the box past 20–25kg. Books get heavy fast, and overloaded boxes are more likely to break or cause injury.
7. Label the Box Clearly
Mark as “Books”, include the room (e.g. Bedroom Shelf, Living Room Bookcase), and add “Heavy” so movers know to lift with care.
Bonus Tip for Book Lovers
Got a few rare or sentimental books?
Wrap them individually in acid-free paper and carry them with you in a personal bag — especially if there’s rain forecast on moving day.
