How to Pack the Hardest Items to Move: A Room-by-Room Guide
How to Pack the Hardest Items to Move: A Room-by-Room Guide
Lamps, plants, electronics, antiques — here’s how to handle the stuff that doesn’t fit neatly into a box.
Introduction
Some items in your home are just...difficult. They’re awkwardly shaped, fragile, valuable or all of the above. Whether it’s a ceramic lamp, a delicate fern, or your favourite guitar, these are the items that movers dread — and that deserve a little extra care.
This guide walks you through how to pack the hardest-to-move items, room by room.
Living Room
Lamps
-
Remove the bulb and lampshade.
-
Wrap the base in bubble wrap.
-
Pack upright in a strong, tall box (with padding at the base).
-
Label: “Fragile – Lamp Base – This End Up”
Best Box:
Electronics (TVs, consoles, speakers)
-
If available, use original packaging.
-
Otherwise, wrap screens in soft cloth or foam, then bubble wrap.
-
Fill gaps with soft padding (linen, towels, foam).
-
Label with "Fragile – Electronics – Keep Upright"
Bedroom
Antiques & Collectibles
-
Wrap individually with acid-free paper + bubble wrap.
-
Add corner protection for any framed or boxed items.
-
Pack snugly in small or medium boxes with plenty of fill.
Tip: Carry irreplaceable items with you when possible.
Houseplants
-
Water lightly a day before moving (not on moving day).
-
Place pots in open boxes or crates, lined with plastic or towels.
-
Wrap tall stems loosely in paper or plastic sleeves.
-
Avoid sealing the box — airflow is key.
Kitchen
Small Appliances (e.g. kettle, toaster, blender)
-
Clean and dry thoroughly.
-
Wrap cords securely.
-
Use a medium box with soft fill around each appliance.
Best Box:
Music Room or Study
Musical Instruments
-
Guitars: Use a hard case if possible, or wrap in a towel + bubble wrap.
-
Keyboards: Bubble wrap + a box with padding on all sides.
-
Small items (pedals, tuners, cords): Zip-lock bags in a separate padded box.
Tip: Loosen strings slightly to prevent tension damage during temperature changes.
Bonus Tip: Create a “Too Fragile for the Truck” Pile
For items that are especially delicate or sentimental, consider moving them in your personal vehicle. Things like heirlooms, jewelry, documents, or artwork can often be safer in your own hands.
